The Vice Chancellor, Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam Dr. Mohammad Saffar Mirjat has emphasized the need to conduct research on the use of sea water, which has huge potential but still unexplored. He was speaking at the seminar to mark the world water day organized jointly by Sindh Agriculture University and Research & Development Foundation (RDF). He said there is water shortage in the country and if the current management practices are continued then soon Pakistan would become water scarce country. He said that numerous countries are desalinizing sea water and Pakistan can learn from their experience and technology. Ashfaque Soomro Programme Head, RDF said that number of nations is fighting over water due to shared water basins. He said that agriculture sector is major user of water and effective water management policies and practices needs to be promoted to address the growing water challenge. He said that the country has no water policy nor Sindh has any water policy, which is imperative for water resource management. He said that climate change and protection of fresh water ecosystem are key environmental challenges and should be given high priority by policy makers. Ms. Shabnam Baloch Programme Manager Oxfam said that role of women as decision maker is not recognized, which is one of the major reasons for women’s poor access to water leading to multi dimensional poverty. She said women is responsible water manager and still spends ample time in water collection and storing at household.

Nasir Ali Panhwar, Programme Advisor RDF said that per capita water availability has reduced form 5650 cubic meter per person in 1951 to current 1000 cubic meter per person. He said that sixty percent of infant deaths are caused by water infections, while stagnant dirty water, both in rural and urban areas, account for a large number of deaths caused by fatal diseases like cholera, malaria, dysentery and typhoid. He said that the total health costs are estimated at Rs 114 billion, which is approximately 1.81 % of GDP. Speaking on the theme water and energy, he said that energy requirements need to be met through options that have least environmental and social impact. Hence, he suggested that future energy needs to be based on sustainable renewable energy and highly energy efficient use.

Dr. Altaf Sial, Dean Faculty of Agriculture Engineering that water crisis has affected all segments of society and future wars on water resources are predicted.
