Job Description: Executive Director, RDF
Job Purpose: The Executive Director is responsible for leading and managing the organization based on the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Board to develop vision and strategy.
- Inform the Board of internal and external issues affecting the organization.
- Serve as a professional advisor to the Board.
- Foster effective teamwork between the Board, Executive Director, and staff.
- Act as a spokesperson and represent the organization at community activities.
Operational Planning and Management:
- Develop and implement operational plans to achieve strategic goals.
- Ensure efficient day-to-day operations and meet stakeholder expectations.
- Draft and review policies, ensuring secure storage and confidentiality of records.
- Support the Board by preparing meeting agendas and materials.
Program Planning and Management:
- Oversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
- Ensure programs align with the organization’s mission and Board priorities.
- Monitor and maintain quality of program delivery.
- Manage special projects from planning to evaluation.
Human Resources Planning and Management:
- Determine staffing needs and oversee HR policies and practices.
- Recruit, train, and manage staff performance.
- Create a positive, safe work environment.
- Discipline and release staff as necessary, following legal procedures.
Financial Planning and Management:
- Prepare and manage budgets in collaboration with staff and the Board.
- Secure funding, develop fundraising plans, and write proposals.
- Ensure sound financial practices and compliance with legislation.
- Provide regular financial reports to the Board.
Community Relations/Advocacy:
- Communicate with stakeholders and establish collaborative relationships with community groups, funders, and organizations.
Risk Management:
- Identify and manage organizational risks.
- Ensure appropriate insurance coverage.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Master’s in Social Sciences, Rural Development, or Business Administration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Leadership and management principles.
- Relevant federal and provincial legislation.
- Community challenges and opportunities.
- HR, financial, and project management.
- Proficiency in word processing, financial management, email, and internet.
Personal Characteristics:
- Adaptability, ethical behavior, relationship-building, effective communication, creativity, client focus, teamwork, leadership, decision-making, organization, planning, problem-solving, and strategic thinking.
Experience:
- Ten or more years of progressive management experience, with 2-3 years in a similar role in a not-for-profit organization.
Working Conditions:
- Office environment with occasional field-based and non-standard workplaces. Standard work week with evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed.
